Most people, around this time of the year, begin to slow down and reflect on the past and prepare for a fresh start. We start planning for the festivities ahead, get our shopping done and begin to wrap up the year. And many already have their next year’s list of resolutions ready to go.

Amongst all resolutions (according to recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others) you will probably see getting fit, losing weight, learning something new, getting more organized, spending more time with family and getting out of debt in 2011 at the top of many lists.

If you’ve considered adding an additional stream of income by starting a home business in 2011 as a means to get out of debt (or for any other reason), then you should definitely consider getting your home business started BEFORE January hits, and these are some compelling reasons why:

1- People are more apt to actually KEEP their resolution if they start BEFORE the “cliched” New Year starts.

2- When you invest in a new business in December (that includes any start-up costs and materials) you may be able to enjoy some tax advantages. In most cases, can WRITE OFF that business investment the FOLLOWING MONTH (in January) and recover your funds quicker, instead of having to wait 13 months to write it off (next year). That’s like starting a business and making your investment money back in 30 days! (depending on when you file, of course). Check with your tax accountant for questions.

3- Usually folks who make a resolution want to start RIGHT AWAY, and having everything in place that you need to hit the floor running on DAY 1 of the new year will be imperative to your commitment to that resolution. You’d be surprised how many things tend to “come up” if you are not prepared.

4- As I mentioned, things tend to slow down for many during this month and those who are on top of their game will benefit. I bet you could share some of these compelling reasons with others who may have the same type of resolutions than you (whatever those may be, but in this example, starting a home business in 2011), and join forces. Having support keeps everyone accountable at least longer than if you were to do it on your own!

5- Most shoppers around this time of the year are in a buying mood. If the business you are starting is something that could be gifted, this could be advantageous to you.

I certainly would never encourage anyone to start a business on a whim simply to reap any tax benefits or any of the above. A new business takes planning, commitment and time. The purpose of this post is to encourage you to consider investing in your home business in December if this was already something on your list that you planned on doing in 2011!

Here is to a prosperous and successful 2011 year in business!
